How to use a discrimination lawyer

The UK has a range of laws that protect you from discrimination. It is unlawful to discriminate against you on these grounds:

  • Gender
  • Race
  • Religion
  • Sexual orientation
  • Age
  • Disability

There are a number of laws that protect your rights, most prominently the Human Rights Act 1998. The UK has also incorporated the European Convention of Human Rights into UK law.

Discrimination can take place in a number of scenarios, and commonly in the workplace. A discrimination lawyer can help you prepare and then fight an alleged case of discrimination no matter the grounds for bringing your case.

Valid practising certificate

A discrimination lawyer should be a member of the Law Society. You should also check that the discrimination lawyer you are using has a practising certificate which is currently in force and valid.

All lawyers must have this certificate to offer legal services to the public. You may also find that some discrimination lawyers specialise in certain cases, as the law regarding discrimination can be highly complex.

Law Society Code of Conduct

Any discrimination lawyer that you use should provide a high level of service, as they should subscribe to the Law Society’s Code of Conduct.

If you do need to make a complaint you should do so initially to your lawyer or the law firm they belong to, as they should have a formal complaints procedure you can use.

If you are still not satisfied with the outcome of your complaint, you can contact the Legal Complaints Service.

This is an independent body that protects the rights of members of the public when they are using legal services. Remember, you will have a much better chance of success if you use a fully qualified lawyer to help you fight your case.
