Understanding international law

Comparative law is how the laws in each country differ from each other. As a UK citizen you must comply with all the laws and other regulations that are currently in force. You are also a EU citizen, which means that many of the laws passed in the EU also apply to you.

Which laws do I need to comply with?

In comparative law all citizens must comply with any EU law that has been adopted into UK law. Note that if there is an EU law that is identical to a UK law, the EU version will always take precedence.

Ignorance is no defence in court if you break a law so ensure you are fully aware of your responsibilities especially when travelling outside of the UK.

what about outside the EU?

Comparative law also applies outside of the EU. For instance, US law is very different to many of the laws that you may be used to in the UK. As such you must be fully aware of the differences to ensure you do not inadvertently break any laws.

Comparative law can become complex and have many subtleties that you must appreciate. If you are in any doubt about any law always seek qualified legal advice as soon as you can.

If you are accused of breaking a law when outside of the UK, it is vitally important to get legal representation as soon as you can. Comparative law should not be interpreted by a layperson.

Your solicitor will have detailed knowledge of the local laws or regulations you have been accused of breaking. They can also represent you in court, which is always advisable as the court and any judge will want to see proper legal council to support your case to ensure you are treated fairly.
