What is a solicitor?

Solicitors are legal professionals who are regulated by the UK Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) - the independent regulatory body of the Law Society of England and Wales. The job of the SRA is to protect the public by ensuring that solicitors are practicing to a high standard, and to handle claims of misconduct or poor service.

Solicitors will be degree-educated and have completed the Legal Practice Course (LPC). They will then have completed a two-year training contract with a firm, specialising in around four areas of law. After qualification, most solicitors choose to practice only one or two areas of law.

How can a solicitor help?

They can help you with both contentious and non-contentious legal issues. Contentious issues involve court litigation. If you become involved in any sort of civil, commercial, or criminal litigation you should contact a solicitor. They will be able to help you bring or defend a claim. In some circumstances they will also be able to represent you in court or, if necessary, instruct a barrister to do this instead.

Non-contentious matters do not require court action, and therefore are usually more economical in solving your legal problem. Non-contentious matters can be resolved using negotiation and offering out-of-court settlements, which avoids large court fees. Using arbitration or mediation is also a good alternative to reach a conclusion. A solicitor can help you with such things.

How do I choose a solicitor?

The UK solicitor you choose to deal with your case should be professional and qualified in the particular area of law you require. Many solicitors practise a wide range of laws; however, it may be more beneficial for your case to instruct a solicitor who specialises in the particular area your case is concerned with.

Depending on the requirements of your case, a solicitor may be able to work from distance via telephone and email, meaning a face-to-face appointment may not be necessary. If you wish to work in this way, we can find the best-suited solicitor in the UK for your case. Alternatively, we can recommend convenient local solicitors who are experienced in your legal issue, and who have been highly praised by our previous clients.
