The types of court in the UK court system


If you are considering making a legal claim it is important that you know which court has jurisdiction over your matter and which one is the most suitable to make an application to. Making an application to the wrong court can be a complete waste of time and money.

The UK court system is divided broadly into civil and criminal courts and with a hierarchy so that the majority of cases are heard in the lower courts, with appeals and cases of higher importance being heard in the higher courts.
