The uses of an employee handbook

An employee handbook is a document published by an employer with information about the workplace, and distributed to its employees.

What is its main purpose?

The benefits of publishing an employee handbook, or updating an existing one, are numerous. The main goal behind an handbook is to prevent disputes and legal issues from arising. Claims to the employment tribunal which can lead to financial fines can be avoided by addressing specific issues in the employee handbook.

As an employer why should you write one?

An employee handbook should be written with the company’s current needs in mind.

The policies and procedures which are addressed in the handbook can always be amended or added to in order to better fit any future needs of a company.

The specific guidelines and policies discussed in the handbook vary significantly depending on the employer and on the industry. But the basic policies which an employee handbook would look to cover are:

  • Company property
  • Discipline procedure
  • Drivers of company vehicles
  • Equal opportunities policy
  • Grievance and appeals
  • Gross misconduct
  • Health and safety
  • Holidays
  • Internet and email usage
  • Timekeeping
  • Absence
  • General rules

Why use an employment solicitor?

If you are an employer and you are thinking of publishing an employee handbook, you may wish to speak with a specialist solicitor. An employment solicitor with specific industry knowledge relevant to your business can help you draft the handbook so as to ensure that the content will be effective in law.

There are many legal guidelines which govern the text of an employee handbook and a legal professional is equipped to operate within them.
