The Intellectual Property Office

The Intellectual Property Office is a government body responsible for intellectual property rights in the UK. The Intellectual Property Office is an executive agency of the Department for Business Innovation and Skills.

The Intellectual Property Office accepts applications for patents, trademarks, copyrights and designs, amongst other intellectual property rights. Registration of the right prevents other people using or copying the product or work without permission.

Making an application

If you wish to make an application to the Intellectual Property Office you should instruct a solicitor to assist you in forming the application. You will need to complete a form and may need to send in drawings or descriptions of the product. You will also need to send in a fee. Your solicitor will ensure that the application is properly completed and will do the relevant searches to increase the chance that the right will be granted.

An intellectual property solicitor will also be able to give you advice on what type of intellectual property rights you need.

The Intellectual Property Office deals with applications from businesses and individuals alike. It is also the responsibility of the Intellectual Property Office to attempt to cut intellectual property crime and you are able to report crimes to the Office and gain access to statistics on this type of crime. If you require a solicitor, however, we can help.
