My fiancé is not from the UK or Europe, can we still get married here?

Marriage within the UK for non-UK nationals is possible but the rules surrounding their entry and permission to marry are complex. Matters such as this should be referred to a family law solicitor for legal advice in order to ensure that the process runs smoothly.
It is possible for couples to marry in the UK even if one of the parties to the marriage is not a UK or European Economic Area (EEA) national. The law concerning their entry into the UK for marriage varies depending on whether they are planning to come just for the ceremony, or if they wish to remain here long term.
If your fiancé is currently abroad, and wishes to come here just to get married then they will need to apply for a visa in order to marry or register a civil partnership. This type of visa will allow your partner to remain in the UK for up to six months inclusive of the period before marriage.
To obtain this visa your fiancé must be over the age of 18, and you must have informed the relevant authority of your intention to marry. Your fiancé must also be able to demonstrate that they can afford their return journey home. This is best accomplished by purchase of a return ticket in advance of their arrival.
If your fiancé is planning to remain in the UK after your marriage then the rules are slightly different. To begin with, you must both be over the age of 21, and you must be able to give evidence that the ceremony is to take place within six months of your partner’s arrival in the UK.
You must also be able to demonstrate to your solicitor that you have met and have known each other previously, plan to live together permanently after the ceremony and have adequate accommodation and financial resources to support your fiancé without them working or being reliant on public funds. Your fiancé will have to apply for entry clearance to enter the UK under this category.
