Information on the District Court

District Courts are part of the Scottish court system. They are summary criminal courts located in each local authority in Scotland. However, the Scottish court system has been going through reform over recent years and district courts and being replaced with Justice of the Peace courts. Both types of courts hear only criminal cases – they do not handle civil matters.

In this section we have set out some useful information about both of these courts, including their jurisdiction and procedures, and the reform processes.
