Criminal fraud

Fraud is becoming more and more common in the UK, with increased identity theft causing more and more people to become victims of fraud. Criminals undertake identity fraud by posing as a legitimate organisation so that they may get the personal information they require to undertake the fraud. Or they might simply go through the victim’s rubbish.

Phishing - pretending to be a bank and sending emails to people asking for their bank details - is one example.

Credit card fraud

Criminal gangs are often able to target large groups of people in one area by card cloning, or searching for documents in rubbish in one area. By the time the fraud comes to light, the criminals have usually moved on. The criminals go on to apply for passports or driving licenses in the name of the victim and use the identification they acquire to apply for bank loans, credit cards or benefits, for example.

Identity fraud can be especially painful for the victim as perpetrators are rarely caught and the effects of identity fraud tend to be long lasting, with victims unable to gain credit for years following the fraud.

Staying safe

Criminals tend to target people in similar ways to gain the information they require, so by keeping abreast of common methods of fraud you can help to protect yourself from becoming a victim. Simple actions such as covering your pin number and reporting e-mails that ask for personal details are good ways of preventing fraud on a small scale.

However, if you have been a victim of fraud then you may need the help of a specialist credit solicitor who can help to reverse problems created by fraudsters.
