Civil litigation

Disputes involving public bodies and or private individuals, which don’t involve criminal law, are settled through the process known as civil litigation. One party will usually be seeking damages, or specific performance, from the other.

The most common type of civil litigation is personal injury. The process will usually start with a complaint being filed at court, but the process will not necessarily end in court - most cases are settled outside of court to save both time and money. Examples of civil litigation cases include:

  • Personal injury litigation
  • Intellectual property litigation
  • Defamation actions
  • Discrimination litigation
  • Debt settlement

Normal financial claims will be for more than a few thousand pounds and a solicitor is advised. If you have a claim which you know is for less than £1,000 you will be able to represent yourself at the small claims court. You should still get some advice on this though, and we use a particular specialist for this.

If this sounds like your situation, go to our small claims page and fill in the form so we can help you.

If your claim is likely to be higher and you would like to obtain legal advice on civil litigation, Contact Law can put you in touch with a local civil litigation solicitor free of charge.
