What is annulment?

 

An annulment is essentially different from a divorce, because it is retroactive. The purpose of an annulment is to return to a state as if the marriage had never occurred in the first place. There are several famous cases of celebrities annulling their marriages – Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall, for example, had their marriage declared null and void due to the manner in which they were married.

There are several advantages to an annulment, but it is much harder to achieve than a divorce and strict criteria govern whether an annulment is allowed.
